What to expect from us during a Fetal Anomaly Abortion

When you call us, the patient care coordinator who answers the phone will assist you in setting up an appointment and connect you to our Special Care Coordinator, a specialist in working with pregnant people and their families in situations such as yours.

They will ask you a series of questions and answer any questions you have about fetal anomaly abortions and to address specific concerns. Your Special Care Coordinator will be there with you throughout this process.

We will need to obtain the referring physician’s information so that we can request your medical records. Our physicians will review your records and, if necessary, contact your physician to obtain any further medically relevant information. We will coordinate with your physicians if further genetic testing is requested.

If you wish, we can arrange for a special way to honor the memory of your baby through the coordination of a cremation or burial.  For those who would like, we can create an imprint of the baby’s footprint for remembrance. And, of course, we can also provide counseling and support referrals for help in coping later on.

We believe that decisions made in these situations are a private, personal matter between a pregnant person and their family. Families with fetal anomaly pregnancies often consult with not only their primary OB-GYN, but also many health care professionals involved with fetal-maternal medicine, and frequently rely on this team for help and advice.  We are proud to be a part of your healthcare team. We are committed to supporting you throughout this process and providing the safest care for terminating this pregnancy. We will honor your requests for confidentiality and treat you with respect and dignity.

Fetal Anomaly Abortion Resources

Northland Family Planning recommends the following resources to help you during your healing journey:

Ending A Wanted Pregnancy – “If you’ve received a severe prenatal or maternal diagnosis and have decided to end your wanted pregnancy, this website exists to provide you understanding, comfort and support. Here, you will find the empathy, compassion and solace you deserve following this uncommon, traumatic and often misunderstood form of pregnancy loss.”

MISSFoundation– “Since 1996, the MISS Foundation C.A.R.E.S. for families experiencing the death of a baby or child at any age and from any cause.  The MISS Foundation provides a sanctuary allowing health and necessary grieving in the face of tragedy which Western culture no longer fosters or supports.

More than 120,000 children die every year in the United States.  Of those, more than 80% die before their first birthday.  The MISS Foundation is a 501(c)3, volunteer-based organization committed to providing crisis and long term support to families after the death of a baby or child.  The MISS Foundation also participates in legislative and advocacy issues, community engagement and volunteerism, and culturally competent, multidisciplinary education opportunities.”

Pregnancy Loss Support Program (PLSP)  from NCJW NY- The National Council of Jewish Women’s Pregnancy Loss Support Program for Miscarriage, Stillborn and Newborn death: “It’s hard to imagine anything more heartbreaking than the loss of a child.  Even the most loving friends and family may not understand a grieving parent’s needs, which can lead to additional isolation and sorrow. For more than three decades, the PLSP has offered free counseling and support for parents who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death, as well as to women who are pregnant following a loss. Our programs are open to all regardless of background, religion, gender and sexual orientation. There is absolutely no religious aspect to our support programs, and all faiths are welcome, as are single parents.”

A Heartbreaking Choice – This website supports women who have undergone a pregnancy termination due to poor prenatal diagnosis, problems with their own health, or for the health of another fetus (selective reduction).

The Compassionate Friends – “Whether your family has had a child die (at any age from any cause) or you are trying to help those who have gone through this life-altering experience, The Compassionate Friends exists to provide friendship, understanding and hope to those going through the natural grieving process.”
