Abortion Costs and Payment

At Northland Family Planning, we believe that high-quality, compassionate reproductive healthcare should be accessible to everyone. We know that navigating healthcare expenses can be stressful, and one of the very first questions patients ask us is, how much does an abortion cost?

We want to assure you that financial concerns should never stand in the way of receiving the safe, non-judgmental care you need. Our staff is dedicated to helping you understand your payment options, navigate your insurance benefits, and connect you with financial assistance if needed.

Understanding the Abortion Cost in Michigan

The overall abortion cost in Michigan varies from person to person. The total fee is generally determined by two main factors: how far along you are in your pregnancy (gestational age) and the type of abortion care you choose.

When you schedule an appointment with Northland Family Planning, our all-inclusive fee typically covers your ultrasound, lab work, educational materials, the procedure or medication, and your follow-up care. We prioritize transparent pricing so you know exactly what to expect before you arrive at our clinic, with no hidden fees.

Abortion Pill Cost vs. In-Clinic Care

Depending on your medical history and gestational age, you may have the option to choose between a medication abortion (the abortion pill) and an in-clinic procedure.

For many patients in the early stages of pregnancy (up to 11 weeks), medication abortion is a preferred option. The abortion pill cost is typically a flat rate that includes the necessary clinic visit, ultrasound, and the medications (Mifepristone and Misoprostol) you will take.

An in-clinic procedural abortion is available for patients further along in their pregnancy or those who prefer to complete the process inside the clinic. The cost for an in-clinic procedure may incrementally increase depending on the number of weeks of pregnancy and the type of sedation or comfort measures you request.

Does Insurance Cover Abortion in Michigan?

Navigating insurance can be deeply confusing, leading many patients to ask: does insurance cover abortion in Michigan?

The answer depends heavily on your specific health insurance provider and your individual plan. Some private commercial insurance plans offer full or partial coverage for abortion services.

If you plan to use private insurance, our knowledgeable staff can help verify your benefits before your appointment so you know approximately what your out-of-pocket expenses will be.

Financial Assistance is Available

If you are uninsured, paying out-of-pocket, or struggling to afford your care, please let us know. Northland Family Planning works closely with local and national abortion funds, including the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and the Reclaim Fund. We can screen you for financial assistance over the phone to help reduce the cost of your care. We accept cash and all major credit cards for payment. We do not accept CareCredit or any Tap Pay options at this time. HSA/FSA cards are generally accepted if they work like a credit/debit card and have the patient’s name on them
