Abortion Pill Options in Michigan

A self-managed abortion …in the Comfort and Privacy of Your Own Home

A self-managed abortion, commonly known as a Medication Abortion or the Abortion Pill, is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy in the earliest stages, without having a surgical abortion. This is an option for you if you are 11 weeks pregnant or less. The abortion pill is prescribed by a trusted physician and is a self-managed at home, with a friend or family member. Many people choose this method because it feels more natural and more private. You are managing your own health care, and we can guide you through your options on how to take the pills so we find what works best for you and your schedule.

Our No Test Abortion Pill Option

We offer a No Test Abortion Pill option for patients less than 11 weeks pregnant, who are certain of the date of their last normal period and do not have medical contraindications. With this option, your time in the office will be significantly less than with a regular appointment. There are other benefits to this option as well. Please call our office for more information and to see if the No Test Abortion Pill is the right choice for you!

How does the Abortion Pill Work?

Using a series of carefully prescribed pills, a medication abortion terminates a pregnancy in the privacy of your home.

The first pill you are given is called mifepristone and is taken in our office. This pill stops the pregnancy from growing. The second set of medication is called misoprostol. These pills are given to you to take at home to pass the pregnancy. Our healthcare staff has special training to help you through this process.  These pills are different from birth control pills and emergency contraception (Plan B).

Is the Abortion Pill Method Right for You?  Some Things to Consider...

  • The abortion takes place over time; you can choose to complete it in one day or two, whatever works best for your schedule
  • Taking the pills and experiencing the abortion at home may feel more private and natural, allowing you to manage the process in the comfort of your own space
  • You can choose to have someone with you at home during the process
  • Some people feel it a less invasive option than a surgical abortion
  • You will pass the pregnancy at home. Think about how you will feel seeing blood clots, and possibly clumps of tissue
  • Based on the manufacturer’s information, a surgical abortion is recommended if the abortion pill fails
  • Bleeding and cramping are a normal part of the process. You could also experience pain, nausea, headaches, vomiting or diarrhea. The bleeding can be heavier than a normal period and can last longer. Medications may be prescribed to help alleviate pain and vomiting.

Advantages to Having an In-Office Medication Abortion Experience

  • PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP - Coming into the office to receive the medication abortion allows for a personal relationship with our healthcare professionals that can provide guidance, additional support and medical care, if needed.  Our team can offer counseling and emotional support throughout the process, addressing any concerns or questions you may have, as well as follow-up care included in the cost.
  • ACCURACY & SAFETY - In person using ultrasound, we can accurately diagnose pregnancy, determine gestational age and evaluate the possibility of an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. This information can be crucial if you are not sure about your last period or how far into the pregnancy you are, thus ensuring a more safe and effective abortion experience.
  • FOLLOW-UP CARE INCLUDED - After the medication abortion, you can receive follow-up care and monitoring to ensure the abortion is complete and that there are no lingering issues or complications at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.
  • CONFIDENTIAL CONVERSATION - Medication abortion at the clinic offers in-person support AND it maintains the absolute highest level of privacy and confidentiality for you. You will have time to discuss all options and concerns without fear of stigma or judgment by our team of dedicated staff.

While online options may offer convenience and accessibility for some individuals, in-clinic medication abortion care provides comprehensive medical supervision, support and safety assurances to ensure the best possible outcome for you.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for the Abortion Pill?

Mifepristone cannot safely be used if you:

  • Have an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy
  • Have an IUD in place (it must first be removed)
  • Have problems with your adrenal glands
  • Have bleeding problems or are taking blood-thinning medications
  • Cannot easily get to emergency medication help, should you need it

Does the Abortion Pill have Risks or Side Effects?

  • The abortion pill has a slightly higher failure rate than a surgical abortion
  • Infection is rare with the abortion pill
  • Medication abortion does not affect fertility or the ability to get pregnant. It does not cause problems for future pregnancies such as birth defects, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or premature birth
