Abortion Pill Options in Michigan
A self-managed abortion …in the Comfort and Privacy of Your Own Home
A self-managed abortion, commonly known as a Medication Abortion or the Abortion Pill, is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy in the earliest stages, without having a surgical abortion. This is an option for you if you are 11 weeks pregnant or less. The abortion pill is prescribed by a trusted physician and is a self-managed at home, with a friend or family member. Many people choose this method because it feels more natural and more private. You are managing your own health care, and we can guide you through your options on how to take the pills so we find what works best for you and your schedule.
Our No Test Abortion Pill Option
We offer a No Test Abortion Pill option for patients less than 11 weeks pregnant, who are certain of the date of their last normal period and do not have medical contraindications. With this option, your time in the office will be significantly less than with a regular appointment. There are other benefits to this option as well. Please call our office for more information and to see if the No Test Abortion Pill is the right choice for you!
What is the Abortion Pill and How Does it Work?
We hope the following information will be helpful in making the choice on whether the medication abortion pill is the right method for you.
Using a series of carefully prescribed pills, a medication abortion terminates a pregnancy in the privacy of your home.
The first pill you are given is called mifepristone and is taken in our office. This pill stops the pregnancy from growing. The second set of medication is given to you to take at home. These expel the pregnancy.
Is the Abortion Pill Method Right for You? What to consider:
- The abortion takes place over time; you can choose to complete it in one day or two, whatever works best for your schedule
- You can choose who will be with you at home during the process
- It is a less invasive option than a surgical abortion
- You will expel the pregnancy at home. Consider how you will feel seeing what looks like a lot of blood (when mixed with water, it looks like there is much more blood then there really is), blood clots, and possibly the pregnancy
- Based on the manufacturer’s information, if the medication abortion fails, a surgical abortion is recommended
- Some people experience pain, nausea, headaches, vomiting or diarrhea. Bleeding and cramping are a normal part of the process. The bleeding can be heavier than a normal period and can last for two weeks. Medications may be prescribed to help alleviate pain and vomiting.
Are there Abortion Pill Risks?
The Abortion Pill has a slightly higher failure rate than surgical abortion, and, if the pregnancy were to continue, the chance of birth defects if the pregnancy is not ended is unknown.
Will the Abortion Pill Prevent Future Pregnancies?
Infection, not abortion, is the greatest threat to future fertility. Infection is very rare with the abortion pill.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for the Abortion Pill?
Mifepristone cannot safely be used if you:
- Have an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy
- Have an IUD in place (it must first be removed)
- Have problems with your adrenal glands
- Have bleeding problems or are taking blood-thinning medications
- Cannot easily get to emergency medication help, should you need it
