Kamala Harris’s Track Record on Abortion Rights

With Kamala Harris entering the 2024 presidential race, many are asking questions about her record. Is Kamala Harris Pro-Choice? Will Kamala Harris fight for abortion rights? The answer is a resounding yes!

In March, Kamala Harris made history by visiting an abortion clinic – something no president or vice president has done in American history. Over the past year, she has traveled the country on her Fight for Reproductive Freedoms Tour in order to spread awareness about abortion rights.

“Extremists across our country continue to wage a full-on attack against hard-won, hard-fought freedoms as they push their radical policies – from banning abortion in all 50 states and criminalizing doctors, to forcing women to travel out of state in order to get the care they need,” said Vice President Harris. “I will continue to fight for our fundamental freedoms while bringing together those throughout America who agree that every woman should have the right to make decisions about her own body – not the government.”

Kamala Harris has a demonstrated record of standing up for abortion rights and pro-choice policy. She’s been unafraid to say the word “abortion,” helping in the fight to destigmatize the procedure. As California’s Attorney General, Kamala Harris fought crisis pregnancy centers – fake clinics that trick women who are seeking abortion care. In the senate, she didn’t hold back in her questioning during Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings to the Supreme Court, asking him, “Can you think of any laws that give the government the power to make decisions about the male body?.”

By contrast, Donald Trump has proudly taken credit for the overturning of Roe V Wade. His appointment of three anti-abortion Supreme Court justices resulted in the state of confusion, fear, and harm to patients we now face across the country. Donald Trump has suggested going even further, supporting a national ban that would destroy legal abortion access even here in Michigan.

In the case of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, it is clear that Kamala is the pro-choice candidate who will champion abortion rights. However, it is critically important that we do not leave our rights to the fate of just one politician. While abortion is legal in Michigan, a takeover by anti-abortion politicians in Lansing could undo everything we have fought for. Nationally, even a pro-choice president like Kamala Harris will need congresspeople and senators in DC who will pass legislation to defend our right to abortion. When casting our ballots in November, we must vote pro-choice up and down the ticket.
