On April 3, a Republican candidate for office in Idaho stated that women who undergo an abortion should be leaglly punished, up to and including the death penalty. A columist the Atlantic hired stated that women who have abortions should be hanged. And Ohio has introduced a bill that would punish those who have or provide abortions with a murder charge.
Huh. So, that’s where we are at. (It is 2018 FYI).
Just as a reminder, a repeat, and louder for those in the back: MAKING ABORTION ILLEGAL DOES NOT REDUCE THE NUMBER OF ABORTIONS. IT WILL ONLY MAKE IT MORE DANGEROUS AND WOMEN WILL DIE.
Outlawing abortion only has the effect of pushing women into the back alleys again for abortion, significantly increasing risks for women’s health and safety.
A 2016 study found that abortions occur at almost the same rate in countries with the most restrictive abortion laws (37 per 1,000 women) as in countries with the fewest abortion restrictions (34 per 1,000 women). The difference between these two: safety. From the World Health Organization, 1 in 4 abortions was safe in countries with high restrictions. In countries where abortion is legal, nearly 9 in 10 abortions were performed safely. 45 percent of abortions worldwide are unsafe, endangering about 25 million women each year.
Time and time again, research like this states over and over that abortion restrictions literally kill women (research also tends to ignore the fact that restrictions force women to carry unwanted pregnancies to term, which brings with it a host of other safety concerns and maternal mortality rate).
The best way to reduce abortion rates: ACCESS TO RELIABLE CONTRACEPTIVE CHOICES.
