What to Expect At A Gynecology Appointment

A visit for a well-woman exam can bring on a lot of feelings, ranging from mild nervous jitters to full on anxiety. But it doesn’t have to! There are many ways you can prepare yourself before you go into the exam room to help make sure your exam is as comfortable and as peaceful as possible. The first thing you should do: make sure you feel comfortable with not only the clinician you see but also the office staff. You’ll be revealing a lot of important information about your life, your sexual health and history, and more. It’s important that you feel you are in a space that is safe and that you feel heard and respected.

At Northland, before you see the nurse clinician, you will meet with a member of our staff who is a dedicated GYN Coordinator. Her role in the office is to make sure any questions, concerns, or problems you are having are addressed and taken care of, and that you understand all follow-up instructions and medications you are prescribed. She will quickly become someone you know by name, and she’ll know you, too.

We have a female nurse clinician who takes care of all of our gynecology patients. She takes her time with every patient to review their medical history, current concerns and complaints, and offers solutions that will fit your lifestyle. It’s important to be very honest with the certified nurse midwife about your sexual practices, partners, and past health history. It will only benefit you and your continued health.

We know that this exam is likely not the highlight of your year. We do everything we can to try and make it as comfortable as possible. When you enter the exam room, you will notice soft lighting and gentle music playing. Our speculums and exam gel are always warmed to ensure a more relaxing experience. Your exam will take a total of about 15-20 minutes, depending on the issues presented.
