What Is An Independent Abortion Provider?

With all the efforts of Republicans in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood, campaigns such as “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” and the hash tag #StandwithPP have been created for people to show support for the services Planned Parenthood provides. The Republicans and anti-abortion groups use abortion as a primary reason for seeking to strip them of federal funding (which mostly comes in the form of Medicaid reimbursements for preventative care services provided). However, this explanation is 100% false. Federal money cannot be used to pay for abortion (except in cases of rape, incest, or life of the mother is in danger).

Donations to the organization have increased dramatically since the November election. However, what often goes unnoticed or ignored are the real threats and issues that Independent Abortion Providers face on a near-daily basis.

Wait. What is an Independent Abortion Provider??

Planned Parenthood might be the national “face” of abortion, but only 3% of the total services they provide is abortion. Independent abortion providers, often called “indies”, provide about 60-80% of abortion care in the country to patients.

Yes, Independent Providers, not Planned Parenthood, do a full 2/3+ of the abortions in the US.

When it comes down to it, supporting your local indie is even more important for abortion access. Who is your local indie? Northland Family Planning!

Indie providers face major threats from state legislatures with each congressional session. Since 2011, state legislatures across the country have introduced thousands of anti-abortion measures. In particular, TRAP laws (targeted regulation of abortion providers) have been on the rise. These laws aim to close down independent abortion providers by requiring medically unnecessary changes to the building, staffing, and other requirements. Indie’s have difficulty meeting all the unnecessary requirements because they cost so much money. Many do close.

Independent providers receive NO federal funding, despite the other services we provide like contraception and GYN exams. We also lack the huge support system that Planned Parenthood has in place to fight legal battles, and “name recognition” to rally support from the pro-choice population.

How Can I Support Northland Family Planning?

Northland Family Planning is proud to be Metro-Detroit’s number one independent abortion provider since 1976, and a member of the Abortion Care Network and National Abortion Federation, two organizations that support Independent Providers across the nation.
