It’s always a compliment when a Northland employee, inspired by their work in the clinic and with our patients, decides to pursue a formal education in Women’s Health Care. It’s even more exciting when one of those former employees returns to the clinic as the NEW Nurse Midwife!
NFP would like to welcome Wendy, our Certified Nurse Midwife. Wendy will be involved in direct patient care; helping our GYN patientsnavigate through all of their reproductive health care choices.
Wendy’s first job out of college was with Northland Family Planning as a patient advocate. She pursued an undergraduate degree in Women’s Studies, and working at Northland helped her decide that she wanted to pursue midwifery.
She left Northland to get her nursing degree, working as an RN with pregnant, birthing, and postpartum women in a hospital birthing center in Detroit. She continued her education during this time, obtaining her Master’s in Nursing from Wayne State University. During midwifery school, Wendy took care of women in a variety of settings, from urban hospitals to homebirths in the mountains.
For the last 8 years, she has provided full-scope midwifery care, including gynecological, prenatal, labor, and postpartum care.
“The word ‘midwife’ means ‘with woman,’ and that summarizes my philosophy of care,” says Wendy. “I feel that it is my job to accompany my clients and to be with them whatever their path may be—be it through a long labor, through a pregnancy affected by complications that they decide to continue or not continue, or through their process of ending an ill-timed or unwanted pregnancy.”
Wendy continues, “I am in partnership with my clients; I am not the ruler or the decider of their care. I am here to provide information and to give guidance. The power to make decisions lies with the woman herself.”
